Chlorhexidine has been proven to have efficacy as an oral antiseptic which may reduce plaque, especially as a perioperative or pre-prophylaxis rinse (Roudebush et al. 2005)
Chlorhexidine lavage: The oral cavity is a contaminated area and thorough dental cleanings are mildly invasive. This means that dental cleanings result in a transient bacteraemia, which is more severe in patients with periodontitis (Daly et al. 2001; Forner et al. 2006; Lafaurie et al. 2007). Dental cleanings cause bacterial aerosolization and contamination of the office environment when ultrasonic instruments are used. Rinsing the oral cavity with a 0.12 or 0.2% solution of chlorhexidine gluconate prior to commencing the prophylaxis, has been shown to decrease the bacterial load (Fine et al. 1992; Bellows 2004).
