What to Avoid with Your Handpiece

WHAT NOT TO DO WITH YOUR HIGHSPEED HANDPIECE

Whether you have a brand new Highspeed Handpiece or you have ‘ole faithful’ that you’ve shared many a dental adventure with, you’re probably well aware of the things that you should do with a HS Handpiece.  So, let’s take a quick look at the top 5 things that you ought NOT do with your HS handpiece.

Don’t Dental Without a Backup!

What does this mean?  Always have a spare handpiece available should the

worst happen.

Handpieces can need repair or service, and when this is discovered, it is usually mid-procedure.  If you experience vibrations, unusual noise, overheating, caught or loose burs, coolant supply failure or leakage STOP the highspeed immediately and contact the manufacturer.

Having a spare handpiece allows you to continue your patient’s treatment uninterrupted and reduce downtime due to equipment failure.

Enjoy peace of mind knowing that you're always prepared for any eventuality.

Don’t Re-use Burs

You wouldn’t reuse a scalpel blade,

would you?

Think of your bur in terms of it being your scalpel.  Every use dulls the cutting blades and the use of dull burs can contribute to turbine wear of the HS handpiece.

Use Incorrect Bur Lengths

Not all burs are designed to be used in all HS Handpieces. Check with your manufacturer the burs designed to use in your specific handpiece.  Also ensure you are using the correct Operating Air Pressures and don’t exceed what is recommended – it could lead to premature failure of the turbine.

Explore our burs solutions section "Burs Made Simple" to understand which burs to choose.

Do Not Immerse

Never immerse handpieces in any cleaning solutions. This can lead to corrosion of internal components.  Follow manufacturer’s instructions on the proper care and maintenance of your handpiece.

Do Not Use Force

Although it might be tempting, forcing the bur to cut places undue pressure on the handpiece chuck system – change the bur instead, it is likely starting to dull.

If you feel you have to ‘force’ a bur into the handpiece, STOP!  Use your spare handpiece and have your nursing staff contact the manufacturer for advice.

The iPush tool makes inserting and removing burs from push button handpieces a breeze. Contact iM3 Sales Team for the right iPush tool for your Handpiece.
