What size luxator should I use for cats and small dogs?

For cats and very small dogs, a 1.3 mm or 2 mm luxator is recommended for fine root work. A 3–4 mm luxator suits small to medium dogs, while a 5 mm luxator is appropriate for larger roots in medium to large dogs. The iM3 Sapphira Luxator is available in 1.3 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm blade widths in both XS and S handle sizes.

What is the difference between an XS and S luxator?

Both feature the same stainless steel blade and the same handle — the difference is shaft length, matched to your hand size. The XS suits smaller hands, placing the fingertip at the working end for maximum control. Larger hands need the longer S shaft to achieve the same fingertip placement and control.

Yes. Elevators and luxators should be regularly sharpened with a fine sharpening stone to maintain cutting performance and reduce the working force needed during extractions.

What is the difference between a luxator and an elevator?

A luxator features a sharper, thinner blade that severs the periodontal ligament with a gentle pushing motion, while an elevator uses controlled leverage and rotation to release the ligament fibres and loosen the tooth. • Clean instruments immediately after use to prevent dirt particles from drying, as dried debris may not be removed through cleaning and sterilisation.
